First, Make It Safe
- If the door is closed, leave it closed.
- If it is partway open or hanging crooked, keep everyone clear and don't press the opener.
- Unplug the opener so nobody runs it by accident.
- Take photos and video of the door from inside and out before anything gets moved.
What Wind Does to a Garage Door
A two car door is the largest opening in most houses. Strong gusts push it inward, and older doors without wind bracing can bow, buckle or blow in.
When that happens the rollers often pop out, the track bends and the hinges crack. Flying debris adds dents on top of that.
The bigger risk is to the house. Once a garage door gives way, wind pressure inside can damage the roof. That's why getting the opening closed and secure matters so much.
Repair or Replace After a Storm
Often repairable: rollers out of track, a bent track section, cracked hinges, one shallow dent on a newer door.
Often a replacement: sections that folded or creased, several dented panels, a door that blew in, or an older door that can't be matched. Sections must line up with their neighbors, so one bad panel usually means three or more.
If the door gets replaced, Florida's code expects a door with the right wind rating for your house. See hurricane rated doors.
Insurance
Storm damage to a garage door is often a homeowners insurance claim, subject to your deductible. Photos, the date and a written estimate from the technician help.
Ask the technician to note on the estimate whether the damage came from wind or debris. Your adjuster will want to know. Keep any broken parts the technician removes until the claim is settled.
Getting Ready for the Next One
If your door is older, ask about a bracing kit or a new door rated for your area. Read garage door bracing.
Before a storm, close the door fully, lock it and unplug the opener. A door left partway open catches wind.
Also check for rust on the track brackets and bolts. Rusty fasteners are often what lets go first. See rust on hardware.
